Melissa, the newest member of our team, leads the organization’s strategic fundraising and long-range sustainability work as the Director of Development. Melissa is a visionary and values-driven leader with a broad range of experience in the nonprofit sector. She has a strong track record of success in building community partnerships, cultivating relationships with donors, and helping donors and organizations make strategic investment decisions based on community needs.
Melissa grew up in Greenville, SC, and then lived and worked primarily in urban neighborhoods in Birmingham, AL and Chicago, IL before moving back to Greenville with her family in 2014. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Samford University and a Master’s in Social Sciences with an emphasis in sociology from the University of Chicago.
Most recently, Melissa served as the Director of Upstate SC STEM Collaborative, an initiative of Clemson University that promotes and supports STEM education and career readiness through community partnerships. She also directed the iMAGINE Upstate Festival, an annual event in downtown Greenville that offers hands-on learning in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) for pre-K – 12 students. Previously, she directed BOOST Greenville, a strategic initiative of United Way of Greenville County that works to ensure that all children benefit from high-quality after school and summer programs to improve their chances for long-term success.
She has served on the boards of directors of Hope Health Center in Birmingham, AL and YouthBASE in Greenville, SC and is enjoys engaging in community-wide efforts to solve our most pressing social issues such as transportation, affordable housing and quality education. Melissa is passionate about empowering the most vulnerable in our community and is gifted at bringing together diverse stakeholders to embrace our cultural distinctiveness and shared values while helping those in need
